Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Cantabria

Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Cantabria (PCTCAN or “Cantabria Science and Technology Park”) is an industrial political tool in the hands of Cantabria's government and it is devoted to encourage social and economic development in the region.

The Park acts as a reference point for economic and business interaction and innovation in Cantabria, promoting innovative companies that are based on science and technology, and knowledge development.

PCTCAN's mission is to create a high-quality science and technology environment in order to draw and/or develop technology-based businesses and institutions encouraging R&D activities and/or projects, thus promoting relations between them and driving Cantabria's business sector towards value generation.

PCTCAN has the following goals:

  • To encourage and contribute to local and regional research, development and innovation through technology and information transfer.
  • To endorse technology and knowledge transfer from universities and public research centres in order to coordinate businesses and institutions, to encourage knowledge, innovation, new ideas and productive sector development. (Career opportunities for students and job generation).
  • To collaborate with other organizations in order to encourage and stimulate technology-based businesses.
  • Along with other agents, to contribute to create innovative and competitive technology-based companies in the park.
  • To supply companies with high-quality locations and facilities and to set up technological and training services in order to strengthen businesses and institutions' added value.

IH-TER

IH Cantabria (or “Unversity of Cantabria Environmental Hydraulics Institute”) wishes to turn itself into an international example concerning basic and applied research and the development of studies, methodologies and tools for aquatic environments —surface and underground continental waters, transition waters and coastal waters—, including all the relevant processes as well as the social and economic issues regarding an efficient and sustainable management of the full water cycle.

Some of its goals are the following:

  • To strengthen research concerning the water cycle and related systems in order to develop state-of-the-art sciences and technologies.
  • To train highly qualified researchers and experts in the field of Environmental Hydraulics.
  • To transfer to society and socially benefit from the achievements that are obtained studying the water cycle and related systems, setting up solid knowledge transfer tools and methodologies for public administrations and national and international companies.
  • To develop models, patents and know-how in order to improve our business' international competitiveness and to meet our administrations' requirements.
  • To provide developing countries with the knowledge and tools they need in order to improve the quality of life of their populations.

Cantabria Coastal and Ocean Basin (CCOB) is one of IH Cantabria's facilities. This great infrastructure allows new applications regarding coastal hydrodynamics research, such as: coastal defence design, coastal erosion analysis, dredging, new aquatic building technologies, aquatic foundation problem-solving, new submarine technology analysis, offshore structure design, anchorage design, floating structures, platforms, ROV, AUV and buoy reliability and design research, aquatic energy systems (waves, currents), design of offshore bases, offshore wind farms and, more generally, any marine engineering activity (whether offshore or coastal) needing physical or numerical modelling.

On the other hand, in Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Cantabria (PCTCAN), where IH Cantabria's complex locates, there is a Torre de Energías Renovables (TER or “Renewable Energies Tower”) which will host companies and institutions that will need the facilities in the complex in order to develop their R&D projects in collaboration with IH Cantabria; particularly, regarding marine power generation.
